Strongsville is a mostly white suburb.
BTW guess who will be traveling with the President, Mr. I will vote no on HCR, Dennis Kucinich. Strongsville is in Mr. Kucinich's district.

GLH, this is a big problem in my city, where the expensive program and well-advertised college programs disingenuously prey on our young people of color, enrolling them and getting them deeper into debt. our young people are often first generation college students who don't even know how to shop around. i can't tell you how many times each year, this issue comes up. . . thanks for reminding us.

everest college is a scam and we are so screwed...this is a warning.
i feel sorry for myself that i am going to everest college here in toronto
i was laid off a few months ago, and wanted to find a way to further my education
since i was too late to register to a semestered school i opted for a career college,
back then i thougnt i had to start something before my employment insurance ran out
so i looked around got into a couple of interviews with different colleges
the presentation made at everest looked too good to be true and it was ...damn it was all a scam:
for 16, 000+ loan (network administration program) that i now i have to pay back
1.i got a book list for all the courses/modules that i have to take.( i have to buy the books myself )
2.no instructor to guide you to do the work..he was there but your ignorance annoys him
3.can't ask questions in doing final projects..(i was told once "it is your project")
now you have students teaching other students what to do on their projects and hopefully you get it right.
besides the know-everything teachers, we have a school president who want to talk about himself...
he told us how he excelled in this and that..how he did this and that..well he didnt go to everest.
and if we talked about our problems with what is going on in the school...he talked about himself..again.
4.certification vouchers.. i have been waiting for 4 months now for 1 voucher, and i am almost done..
the school diploma is nothing without the industry certification, other students who graduated are still waiting..
anyway i am reading books on my own, i am doing projects on my own, getting lectures from youtube
i am behind in my so called self paced studies??? ...when i am trying to do everything on my own???
and with no one there to help us...how we survived this many months..i don’t know
well i admit i was scammed..and too embarrassed to tell my friends about it.. i tell them im ok
and everyone that complained..ends up getting dropped out of class or leaving the school
i am an old man, who's prospect for good employment has passed but i am trying everything i can
but this could be the last straw that breaks this old man's back..this time i think im really screwed.
i am stuck with this student loan, i still need to get the voucher i was promised, i am broke, no job
and at best i did all the studying on my own with no help from the teachers there,
i learned to do this the hard way, at the very least i know how to do this now
i could have done all this at the comforts of my soon-to-loose apartment.
I could have worked at McDonalds during the day and did all the reading that i wanted to do at night
maybe i wouldn’t have a loan to worry about and could have come out of this a wiser man.
everest college took advantage of my ignorance..i have to pay for that.. for a very long time
but what goes around comes around ...when that day comes i hope they pay big time

Even non-profits looking to gain support for their ed programs, the way the competitive grant process goes, it is far too easy to pump up what you are proposing beyond what it can actually accomplish. I know because we have been applying and have been very careful to look at the job markets and pathways and be honest about what the real prospects are, even with training. And, the kind of necessary support beyond what the grants are covering that is necessary for folks to be truly successful (i.e. childcare, transportation, general job and life habit shifts. . .etc.). Many of the people reviewing proposals probably don't want to acknowledge these realities and the kind of visionary program design necessary to encompass them. My experience is that they want the quick fix, even if it is not based on reality. We have not yet found support for two great programs we have put together over the years, but we keep on applying.

But the profits have come at substantial taxpayer expense while often delivering dubious benefits to students, according to academics and advocates for greater oversight of financial aid. Critics say many schools exaggerate the value of their degree programs, selling young people on dreams of middle-class wages while setting them up for default on untenable debts, low-wage work and a struggle to avoid poverty. And the schools are harvesting growing federal student aid dollars, including Pell grants awarded to low-income students.

“If these programs keep growing, you’re going to wind up with more and more students who are graduating and can’t find meaningful employment,” said Rafael I. Pardo, a professor at Seattle University School of Law and an expert on educational finance. “They can’t generate income needed to pay back their loans, and they’re going to end up in financial distress.”

When Dick Cheney took the stage on February 18 at the Conservative Political Action Conference, where thousands of right-wingers had gathered to speechify, debate, and hone their message, it seemed just like old times. The surprise appearance of the former vice-president was the idea of his older daughter, Liz, the blonde and biting critic of President Obama who was scheduled to make her own star turn at the conference. The details of the stealth operation were known only to the Cheney family and a small circle of aides and shared, says one person involved, on “a need-to-know basis.”

Liz arrived alone at the Washington, D.C., Marriott Hotel, while her sister, Mary, spirited their father through a side door and up to a room on the eighth floor, his undisclosed location, a short walk from the main stage. With 45 minutes until showtime, Liz met them in the room, where she practiced her speech in front of her father. The message: The president is dangerous and unwise, a fact even her 9-year-old daughter can plainly see, but conservatives are now resurgent, a righteous minority on the rise.

“They’ll try to attack us, and they’ll play dirty,” she warned. “They’ll try to silence us … President Obama, you will never silence us.”

Her father was pleased and proud. It had been a long and fruitful year for the Cheneys, whose ubiquity on the national scene had surprised members of both parties. By the end of the Bush administration, Dick Cheney had become one of the least popular politicians in America (approval rating: 13 percent), and it was expected that once out of office he would, as he put it, “go fishing” and wait for history to prove him right or wrong. But it quickly became clear that Dick couldn’t sit on his hands—and neither could Liz. She has spent nearly every day since her father’s departure from the White House attempting to extricate him from the jaws of infamy by turning current events into a referendum on his policies. Casting herself as his defense lawyer, she has appeared on television 40-odd times in the last year. And she’s conducting the research for a Dick Cheney memoir, a book she persuaded her father to write.

“She’s more combative and she would rather he answer more critics than his own instincts might suggest,” says Barton Gellman, the author of Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency. “He doesn’t care what people think of him; she does.”

During the Bush years, Liz Cheney became her father’s close adviser, fighting proxy battles for him inside the State Department. By the time Barack Obama was elected, her views on U.S. foreign policy had become even more hawkish than her father’s—amplified, say associates, by bitterness over Dick Cheney’s treatment in the press and by fellow Republicans, including former Bush officials.

“They were hurt,” says Alan Simpson, the former Wyoming senator and friend of the Cheneys since the sixties. “Liz especially. There’s always the feeling of the unfairness of the treatment of her dad. That would drive a person.”

It’s driving her straight into the family business. As she builds a platform for herself with a political-action group called Keep America Safe, Republican Party strategists are already taking her measure for a congressional run as early as 2012. The same people who alighted on Sarah Palin, including Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, are hoping she can tap the anxieties of the so-called security-mom base that Palin helped to energize.

“She’s likely to seek office in Wyoming or Virginia,” says Karl Rove, the former Bush political adviser and a man who knows something about the underestimated children of political families.

But it will require a serious campaign—and a bit of well-orchestrated political theater—to pull it off. So while Liz prepared to go onstage at CPAC, Mary snuck their father into the VIP holding area, where the Cheney entourage quietly fielded BlackBerry messages about the rumor that the former vice-president was in the building. Word of his appearance had been artfully leaked to friends at Fox News, prompting Greta Van Susteren, host of On the Record, to post on Twitter: “just got email from fox colleague that her father vp cheney to walk her on stage.”

The fuse was lit. As Liz spoke, the crowd roared with expectation, hanging on her every word but also looking over her shoulder, until finally: “There is one man in particular we all know who certainly has taught me what it means to have the courage of your convictions,” Liz said, a grin spreading across her face. “You know who I’m talking about.”

And out came Dick, a bit thinner than anyone remembered, his hair whiter, with a slight hobble, but beaming with delight at his rock-star reception. As the crowd chanted “Run, Dick, run!,” he looked like he could hardly believe how much fun he was having. But he reminded the crowd that he was there for his daughter: “There comes a time when those of us of our generation need to move on” to make room for the next generation. After his speech, Dick Cheney headed home, while Liz stayed and signed autographs.

In December, I posted ratings for each Democratic Representative based on how they voted on 10 key agenda items in 2009. The idea was to see how each Democrat voted relative to the partisan slant of his district; a Democrat voting for the cap-and-trade bill in a Republican-leaning district would get quite a bit of credit for that, for instance, while one voting for the same measure in a district with a PVI of D+15 would get almost no credit for the vote since almost every Representative from such a district voted for the bill anyway.

But what if we don’t build in an exception for the so-called “liberal no’s”—that is, simply take every vote at face value? It turns out, then, that Davis is no longer the least valuable Democrat. Instead, it is Dennis Kucinich, who voted against health care, the hate crimes bill, the budget, the cap-and-trade bill, and financial regulation—all ostensibly from the left—in spite of coming from from the strongly Democratic Ohio 10th district near Cleveland.

Nate goes on to mention that, indeed, Kucinich may be moving the Overton windows somehow.

My question: couldn’t Kucinich do this on less important votes? And why do so many wank about Overton windows while mocking eleven-dimensional chess? A pony plan is a pony plan is a pony plan…..

Pass the fucking bill and you can fuck around Overton windows all you want to, Dennis.

There is alot of Democratic party corruption going on in Cuyahoga County, OHio. The big wigs in the party may be thrown out of office and or going to jail. Dennis may be out of luck once the old Dem leadership is kicked out. I could never understand how that man kept his job because I can't see anything he has done for his district.

Artur Davis of AL-7, who has voted against several major agenda items because he is running for governor in Alabama, was the least valuable Democrat.

I wonder who tricked Artur Davis into thinking he had a snowball's chance in hell of being governor of Alabama. That was one helluva April fool's joke.

Well, he was at Harvard right around the same time as President Obama, and was the first pol to endorse candidate Obama's presidential bid outside of Illinois. He was prominent and gave a speech at the Democratic National convention in 2008 seconding candidate Obama's nomination. That was when i really noticed him. I assumed he would be a real trooper for President Obama's agenda in the congress.

But alas he has turned coat. Not sure if it is simply to boost his wingnut credentials for his gubernatorial bid in Alabama or whether he has contracted Tavis' crab disease. He has consistently voted against many of the President's signature issues. He voted against healthcare in November but says he prefers the senate bill. Let's see if he will vote for it this time around. If not , then Jesse Jackson can let loose once more on his ass. I am just sick of these preening mofos who have no concept of why they are in congress, let alone party loyalty. If they can't vote for core Democratic platform agenda, then why the hell are they Democrats?

Jihad Jane Upsets Notions of “White” and “Woman”

Long before 9/11, Americans had a firm understanding of what terrorists looked like. They’re assumed to be of Middle Eastern descent and, predominantly, men. With these characteristics in mind, racial and gender profiling have been implemented to make the country safer (supposedly): Brown male bodies signify danger.

The federal indictment of Colleen R. LaRose, a.k.a. “Jihad Jane,” has problematized this conception. LaRose is not only a woman, but a white, blonde, blue-eyed suburban American. The Montreal Gazette refers to her as “a Main Street, U.S.A. girl,” and it quotes Michael L. Levy, chief prosecutor of East Pennsylvania, as saying, “The case shatters any lingering thought that we can spot a terrorist based on appearance.”

White womanhood is a complex identity, because even as it is reviled to ensure the perpetuation of patriarchy it is also uplifted to ensure White supremacy. But when LaRose took the name Jihad Jane–thus identifying herself with Islam, a religion many westerners view as violent despite its core teachings and the behavior of most followers–she disassociated herself from Whiteness. And that made it impossible for commentators to once again apologize for a White American who commits domestic terrorism.

When Joe Stack flew his plane into an Austin IRS building recently, his Whiteness caused him to be understood as simply an angry man who felt trapped by the system rather than a representative of his race. Republican Texas gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina added to this construction by stating that Stack’s actions are reflective of “the hopelessness that many in our society feel.” Though Medina was quick to say, “You cannot excuse that kind of behavior,” she also called Stack’s final flight “an act of desperation.” Few have been willing to label him the domestic terrorist that he is, despite the fact that he left a lengthy manifesto describing his alienation.

More than gender separates Stack and LaRose. Stack did not frame his actions in language that Westerners associate with Middle Eastern terrorism and, in fact, many may identify with his gripes against the IRS. Stack was Everyman, his Whiteness never in question, whereas LaRose abdicated the privilege of her Whiteness.

Whiteness represents light and goodness; black and brown skin embody evil and foreboding. Consider this: Immediately after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, some were quick to suggest that a Muslim terrorist group was probably responsible. It did not occur to them that such an action could be committed by a White U.S. Army veteran.

Although LaRose complicates the idea of who may be a terrorist, the black/white binary is still affirmed. Since she has declared herself a jihadist, she takes on attributes of the “other,” and thus makes it clear that her ability and/or desire to cause harm does not initiate within Whiteness. David Kris, head of the U.S. Justice Department’s national security division, said the indictment of LaRose “underscores the evolving nature of the threat we face,” suggesting that law enforcement will now be hyper-aware that White citizens of the U.S. may indeed appropriate violent, terrorist strategies.

Even when LaRose has her day in court, the court of social opinion will try to resurrect and refine the purity and goodness of Whiteness. She will be reduced to Jihad Jane, a name that separates her alleged actions from White femininity. Like every other White criminal, she will be seen as an exception rather than the rule. Jihad Jane will serve as a cautionary tale: See, that’s what happens when a White person takes on attributes of the “other.”

I bet tickling would have worked much better than waterboarding.
