CBS making huge mistake with Tebow ad
Will network accept message from atheist group? Probably not

I know why CBS is running an ad sponsored by Focus on the Family and starring Tim Tebow. It needs the money.

There is no other reason — and certainly no good reason — for anyone, including a television executive, to decide that the ethical standards which had stood for generations are suddenly no more worth preserving than that hairball the cat just coughed up. Advertising revenues are down throughout the industry, and one way to combat that is to accept ads you used to refuse from organizations dedicated to bigotry and divisiveness.

And so we get an anti-abortion ad by a homophobic organization during the biggest sporting event of the year. At a time when we’re all sitting together watching the big game, we’ll have another reason to argue and yell at each other.

Daily update from USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).

Pics from Day 12 are going up now, one point of interest is that they are bringing in aid far west of PauP now, after having stabilised the situation on Île de la Gonâve. They even have pics of two Air Cushion Landing Craft (aka hovercraft) hitting the beach, and MV-22 Ospreys. They are using all tools at their disposal to land humanitarian supplies.

One million gallons of JP-x, that is close to $10 million. That is just for the helos and the few fixed-wing ac that have cycled. The Carl Vinson herself does not need to refuel, of course.

'Vertreps' = vertical replenishment. They have had to move out into the Windward Passage for sufficient searoom for the fuel and connected supply transfer.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) - It's a very busy morning as we're doing a "refueling at sea" and getting 1,000,000 gallons of jet fuel from USNS Big Horn. We're also taking on tons of supplies from the USNS Sacagawea. These two evolutions are "connected", so we're steaming, side-by-side, joined by wires, cables, and big hoses. To make it even more challenging, we're simultaneously doing "vertreps," as we get supplies transferred by helicopter.

This is indeed a rough spot for them, but I guess they get to see who's really on their side. Landrieu Phone Tampering Case: What Is The Pelican Institute?

There's a lot we still don't know about the four men implicated in the alleged attempt to tamper with Sen. Mary Landrieu's phones yesterday, but a little-known organization called the Pelican Institute appears to be key to the story.

Located at 400 Poydras St. in downtown New Orleans -- half a block from Landrieu's office at 500 Poydras St. -- Pelican describes itself as a state policy think tank dedicated to advancing "sound policies based on the principles of free enterprise, individual liberty, and limited government."

James O'Keefe, the conservative filmmaker behind the ACORN stings who has been charged in the Landrieu case, was scheduled to give a talk at Pelican last Thursday on "Exposing Truth: Undercover Video, New Media and Creativity." Tickets were $35; the setting was the posh Plimsoll Club at the World Trade Center. An ad for the luncheon promised attendees insights into O'Keefe's special strain of new media genius:

"James' videos of ACORN employees providing advice on how to break the law created a sensation. Shortly after the videos were released Congress voted to defund ACORN. James has been a pioneer in the use of new media to drive these kinds of important stories. He will discuss the role of new media and provide examples of effective undercover video."

Another of the charged men, Robert Flanagan, works for Pelican, his attorney told the Times-Picayune. Flanagan allegedly dressed up a telephone repairman to infiltrate Landrieu's office.

Here are a few of his posts on the Pelican blog (for example, "State Senator Unveils Legislation Prohibiting National Health Care Mandates").

What appears to be his LinkedIn profile says Flanagan was an intern for Rep. Mary Fallin (R-OK) in Washington last year. Fallin spokeswoman Kathryn Bruns tells TPM that Flanagan was a "helpful guy." He attended Rhodes College in Memphis.

The Wall Street Journal opinion page published a glowing profile of Pelican and its leader, Kevin Kane, in August 2008:

A rising leader among them is Kevin Kane, a native New Yorker smitten with Louisiana since attending Tulane University in New Orleans in the 1980s. Confident the state will reverse course with the right help, Mr. Kane moved with his family to the Big Easy this spring to establish the Pelican Institute for Public Policy, a think tank promoting reforms rooted in market solutions and limited government.

"The whole trend of losing good people to other states has forced a reckoning," Mr. Kane explains, and citizens once apathetic or resigned are increasingly civic- and reform-minded. Community rebuilding efforts after Katrina helped foster this sentiment and, crucially, changes on the political scene may sustain it.

In yet another possible connection to the Landrieu case, Kane also blogs at Big Government, the Andrew Breitbart site.

Big Government is where O'Keefe's ACORN sting videos were posted, though Breitbart has said, "We have no knowledge about or connection to any alleged acts and events involving James O'Keefe at Senator Mary Landrieu's office."

It seems Whoreanna has become the self-appointed spokesperson on the plight of the middle class in our country. As if. She’s an ueber-right idealogue, who married a fortune and sucked up a mega divorce deal (along with a lot of other things along the way) and suddenly converted from slightly Right of the Teabag Party to saintly Progressive overnight in November 2004 … for a price. (No surprise there).

She’s second-guessing and threatening this President again. No doubt tomorrow (following the State of the Union address) she’ll be all over MSNBC, causing Ed’s blood pressure to rise, eliciting more syllable-strangling mixed metaphors from Keith, or else she’ll be over on The Situation Room, causing Wolf Blitzer to cream his knickers.

She is a corporate whore doing the job of the corporations and people are stupid enough to drink her toxic koolaid. And for someone who’s championing freedom of speech, she sure as hell doesn’t practice it.

I would love to issue her the challenge of living for a MONTH on an average middle class salary and living in an average middle class home, juggling bills, mortgage payments, car expenses etc. She simply couldn’t do it. She’d be out of that house so fast, the front door wouldn’t hit her feta-cheesed ass. Site Provides Instructions for Transporting Aid

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill., Jan. 27, 2010 – U.S. Transportation Command’s Web site now provides instructions for nongovernmental or nonprofit organizations seeking airlift or sealift for humanitarian supplies and relief personnel.

"How Do I Get Lift?" is an interactive presentation that steers customers through the process of acquiring qualifying military-provided transportation for cargo or people.

The ongoing crisis in Haiti has led numerous private organizations to request a simple way to navigate through complex U.S. military rules regulating the movement of cargo and passengers, officials said.

"This presentation meets a need in the national humanitarian relief community," said Lance Carpenter, chief of Transcom’s Joint Interagency Communication Group. "It will help [nongovernmental organizations] more easily and quickly identify qualifying opportunities to move relief supplies and personnel into places like Haiti.

5,000-Bed Hospital to Increase Haitian Medical Capacity

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2010 – U.S. and international relief workers in Haiti are developing a 5,000-bed hospital in the capital of Port-au-Prince to increase medical capacity as the country struggles to recover two weeks after a devastating earthquake struck.

Among other facilities, the hospital will accept patients from the floating hospital ship USNS Comfort, where more than 100 surgeries have been performed since arriving at the Haitian coast last week.

Though still some weeks away from becoming fully operational, U.S. medical equipment that will outfit the additional hospital in northern Port-au-Prince has begun to arrive, Army Lt. Gen. P.K. Keen, the top U.S. commander in Haiti, told Pentagon reporters today.

“We are anticipating to at least get the seeds of that hospital up within the next week or so, but that we'll begin small and then grow from there,” Keen said via teleconference from Haiti. “We are hoping to be able to at least start with a 250-man centerpiece.”

Haitian authorities have said more than 150,000 bodies have been buried in Haiti since a magnitude 7 earthquake devastated the country Jan. 12. Original estimates by the Red Cross were that upwards of 3 million Haitians were affected.

International aid continues pouring into Haiti in the midst of what an official called one of the greatest humanitarian emergencies in the history of the Americas. Among those assets is the USNS Comfort, on which U.S. medical personnel has taken aboard nearly 400 patients, performed more than 100 surgeries and filled more than 11,800 prescriptions since its Jan. 20 arrival.

Keen said the Haitian government quickly granted a request for a large piece of land -- situated near the hospital ship and also accessible by road -- that could host the 5,000-bed hospital. A principal source of the incoming patients will come from the Comfort, he added.

Pew's Project for Excellence in Journalism has added up the news from last week. Coverage from Haiti filled most of the newshole -- 27% -- and was the leading story on network news with 35% coverage.

But Republican Scott Brown's victory in the Massachusetts special election for Senate was the top story on cable news filling 32% of the newshole.

In their report, PEJ writes, "there were marked differences in how CNN, MSNBC and Fox covered Haiti and the Massachusetts election."

• About 60% of the CNN coverage was dedicated to Haiti -- almost four times as much attention as it received on MSNBC and Fox. Conversely, the Senate race race filled approximately 40% of coverage on MSNBC and Fox and only about 15% on CNN.

XXL Publisher Tries Chances With Lifestyle Mag, Juicy

If the recent boost in ad sales for women's magazines wasn't enough of a sign that print is making a recovery, then how about the news of Harris Publication's comeback from its year of title folding?

The publisher shuttered one of its two hip-hop titles, King, last April, but is marking the beginning of 2010 with the release of Juicy, a magazine that according to Harris' XXL magazine's Web site, will be the "first celebrity and lifestyle magazine for African-American women to sit on national newsstands alongside People, US Weekly, In Touch, Life & Style and OK."

The first issue will launch in May and will join XXL as part of the Harris empire.

It's shaping up to be a good year for the black community's comeback in the media market, with Vibe's December relaunch under new publishers and Moguldom Media Group's recent redesign of Bossip.com after a 100 percent traffic increase in 2009.

Of course, launching a lifestyle spin-off does have its downside. Vibe Media Group tried launching one of their own, The Most! last year, just a few weeks before Vibe folded in late June. Let's hope Harris has more luck in 2010 than Vibe Media had in 2009.
