The REAL Reason Behind the CBC Holdout
A couple of weeks ago, the Congressional Black Caucus threw down the gauntlet and forced Barney Frank to shutdown the House Financial Services Committee’s vote on a bill that would overhaul the financial regulatory system. Maxine Waters and 9 other CBC members, who sit on the Finance Committee, claimed their action was the result of the Obama Administration ignoring the needs of their Black and Brown constituency in regards to the economy and unemployment. Yesterday, after two weeks of delay, the committee vote on the bill came up again, and despite a boycott by the CBC, it passed 31-27.
Some have applauded the CBC’s actions. Last week, my colleague, Webb wrote a post praising their decision (SEE: WEESeeYou Congressional Black Caucus (CBC): “Y’all will shut a mutha f*cka down!”) However, I wasn’t ready to give dap to the CBC. My Spidey Senses were telling me that the CBC was full of shit.
Let’s face it: African Americans being disportionately affected by the economy and unemployement ain’t nothin’ new! It’s been going on for YEARS and a majority of the members of the CBC have been in office long enough to know this AND do something about it, but it’s only NOW that they decide to flex their muscle on behalf of their constiuents? Sorry, CBC. You need more people.
My colleague, and WSY Fam, Miranda brought up a good question yesterday:
“I wonder what specific policy initatives they are bringing to the table that aren’t being addressed? Something tells me not one of the ten could tell me either.”
Word, Miranda! The first time the CBC decided to delay this vote, you’d think they would have their wishlist fired up and ret ta go so they can take it to the media. On the contrary, when pressed for specifics, they clammed up.
Nah, son. Something’s shady going on and it looks like my Spidey Sense were on point:

Black Caucus Seeks to Ease Radio’s Woes
By ERIC LIPTONWASHINGTON — The radio business has nothing to do with the plan to overhaul the nation’s system for regulating banks and other financial institutions.
Except, it turns out, in Congress.
One of most intriguing mysteries here in recent weeks is why members of the Congressional Black Caucus have chosen to buck their party and president in trying to stall financial regulation reform.
The answer lies at least in part with an aggressive lobbying campaign by a troubled New York City-based radio broadcasting company, Inner City Broadcasting, whose co-founder is a prominent New York politician and businessman, Percy Sutton.
In a rare break with President Obama, the caucus, made up of black members of Congress, is holding back support for the legislation because it wants the administration to help minority-owned businesses, including Inner City, whose financial plight has been specifically identified in meetings with top administration officials.
Inner City Broadcasting, which owns 17 commercial stations nationwide and was co-founded in 1971 by Mr. Sutton, faces a possible financial collapse because of pressure by Goldman Sachs and GE Capital to repay nearly $230 million in debt, Pierre Sutton, his son, said in an interview Wednesday.
Inner City has been battered by declines in advertising, as have many stations around the country, which have experienced drops of 10 percent or more in the last year because of the recession and the move of advertisers to the Internet.
While others are suffering, too, Black Caucus members and lobbyists for Inner City in a series of meetings have pressed the administration for special help for black-owned broadcasters like Inner City, participants in the meetings said.

After yesterday’s vote, Politico reported the following:
The bill passed easily, but Waters suggested the CBC’s 43 members could vote with the GOP to scuttle a variety of Democratic bills if Obama and Emanuel don’t address what she thinks is a lack of understanding of the CBC’s wide-ranging goals of reducing urban unemployment, home foreclosures and bank failures.
Yeah, because Republicans really care about Black people.
Another thing: Is political payback in play here? I find it…interesting that Waters, a Clintonista, is leading the charge. Ya’ll know some of these Clinton supporters still can’t accept that President Barack Obama beat their girl, Hillary Clinton. And then there’s the CBC, aka the Clinton Black Caucus (tm Webb), who are pissed that PBO made it to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. without kissing their rings.
Here’s what I think W.E.E. should do: Contact the Congressional Black Caucus and let them know that W.E.E. See Them!

Wow, just another example of why some of these black caucus dinosaurs need to be booted out of Congress. Looks like they are helpin out one of their own alright and it doesn't have a goddamn thing to do with the average hard-working black American. Sick

My spidy senses were tinkling over that story about the Financial Services committee too. Financial reform with the Consumer Protection Agency would have helped black people by curtailing predatory lending in the community. So, this story explains a lot. The CBC needs to hear some calls. Everyone in radio is hurting and nobody really cares. This is really selfish on their part and I hope PBO tells them to take a flying leap. They are betraying PBO over this crap? I thought they would want stronger financial reform–like not giving the Fed so much power, but no, they are getting all wee-weed up over radio. That ain't even 30 pieces of silver. I swear PBO need to have that O'Jays song “Backstabbers” on replay. Who's gonna take the knife out of his back?
Democrats always manage to do this to each other. Will Rodgers was right: The Democratic Party is not a political party.

Dayum! So basically these weasels are looking out for them and their cronies, but masking it as a rebellion against Obama in the name of black communites…
You mean to tell me, I got snookered? SMH…

Shameful!

“…just another example of why some of these black caucus dinosaurs need to be booted out of Congress.”
Makes one wonder how and why 10 CBC members, 25% of the total, right?, ended up on the same Committee, or sub-Commitee. Easy enough to dilute their power by spreading them across more Committees.

Need to make some calls is right. Also need some righteous folks to start – or continue – building cred by doing good work in the community, so that there is a track record to point to for all age groups. Then, they can start challeging some of these entrenched folks by running for office.

Call 'em out Sepia! We need to let the CBC know that WEE will shut this muthafucka down!!
December 3rd, 2009
WOw, ain't this some shyt…dayum, is a brotha gonna have to eat his own words.
From the NYTimes article:
But privately, participants in some of the meetings said, the Obama administration has raised objections, saying it did not believe it was appropriate to pressure financial institutions to make concessions for specific loans or businesses, according to one person who attended a meeting with Treasury and White House officials on the topic but asked to remain anonymous.
Amen! The notion that the CBC would be fighting for a “single” small business versus ALL small businesses is sad and bad politics.
However, if Geithner/Summers can jump, dive, juke, and jive to save Goldman Sachs and GE with trillion dollar bailouts, while OUR people get the shaft disproportionately…the CBC fugged up if all of this was for just “one” black business.
Great Post Sepia!

Sheila Jackson Lee would be one! Just can't forget how she acted during the primaries.
December 3rd, 2009
To think, I thought they were actually trying to do some good. I should have known better, lobbyists always rule the day. I'm so sick of hearing about the plight of Black radio stations, if they were that damn good, they'd have more ad revenue.
December 3rd, 2009
What a breath of fresh air.
December 3rd, 2009
Don't get indigestion, Webb. WEE still called them out. Sepia done brung it!
December 3rd, 2009
I called Rep Keith Ellison's office tonight and left a message. I will keep calling until I get a live voice on the line.

It's amazing that they chose to jump bad and try and hold up a bill that would overhaul financial regulation……………hey…..has anyone seen any statements or press releases from any CBC members about the Wells Fargo class action lawsuit regarding the accusations that this behemoth bank bent the black community over, no vaseline…and screwed us over righteously?? Anyone? Nothing from any of these CBC members about the predatory lending tactics that are well documented by former Wells Fargo employees on how they put our community out on the stroll in 5 inch pumps and fishnet stockings? But they choose to hold up THIS bill to help out Percy Sutton and Inner City Broadcasting??
now I aint saying the CBC are some golddiggas
but they aint messin wit no broke *******

I woke up to this shit on Morning Joke. Joke was interviewing E. Cummings from Maryland and playing the “division” in a way to suggest that everyone across the board, black, white, liberal, conservative, agree that Obama is a failure.
The New York Times article was a bombshell. Thank you, so very much Sepia, for bringing that to the attention of the community. In terms of the Politco article, I found this striking:
“I think that it is important for us to educate those people around [Obama],” Waters told reporters. “We’ve got to get his people educated and moving. We have not brought these issues to him personally — it is important first to educate those people around him so they understand.”
WE HAVE NOT BROUGHT THESE ISSUES TO HIM PERSONALLY! Everytime something is brought to the President, personally, he acts on it. Examples, the black farmers dispute, credit to small businesses, veterans affairs, the delay in implementing the stimulus, etc. etc.
I won't make sweeping generalizations. I don't get the logic of not bringing it to him personally, but yet taking every camera opportunity to bash him and sow seeds of doubt about him.

That's today's Thursday Throwback Alex. Check the WEE Peeps thread.

Damn. Like my step-grandmother, Fatty used to say, “I can't win for losing.”

Alex, my grandmother would say that your'e “in tune with the moon” It's serendipity!

“I don't get the logic of not bringing it to him personally, but yet taking every camera opportunity to bash him and sow seeds of doubt about him.”
Well that's perfectly understandable….How can you get something that's not there?
The CBC has showed its azz, at least these 10 members of the Finance Committee have…..I'm so done with them right now.
December 4th, 2009
If PBO had done this: helped ICB and the media found out, you know he would get impeached for helping out one industry–a black industry at that. He'd be under the jail and impeached. PBO did the right thing, here. Much as I hate it, Goldman Sachs has more impact on the economy than ICB. I liked the idea to get Goldman to loan ICB money, but to stop financial reform over ICB is dumb. I'm with Miranda on this: If the CBC were taking on Wells Fargo and the other banks that hoodwinked the black community, I'd be with them, but to defend ICB so they can play the coonery-bufoonery that passes for black radio today is reprehensible.
December 4th, 2009
The more I think about how silent the CBC has been regarding Wells Fargo when it has been WELL documented that they prey'd on our communities, had specific GOALS to stick our communities with bad loans – the angrier I become….and they have the unmitigated gall to do this?
completely disgusted with them…..COMPLETELY.
December 4th, 2009
THANK YOU! That's why this latest boycott ain't nothing but postering on their part. And I bet if we were to really dig on the CBC, we'd find that some of them were hooked up with Wells Fargo, too.
Another thing: Isn't Maxine Waters being investigated by the Ethics Committee?
December 4th, 2009
Exactly! Waters should know that since she's presently under investigation for securing TARP money for OneUnited — a bank SHE has financial ties to. So, how does that make her any different than Geither or Summers?
December 4th, 2009
Thanks, Webb.
BTW, I hope my post didn't come across as an indictment towards you or anyone who initially supported the CBC's stance. That wasn't my intention at all. On the surface, I understood why some gave them kudos. W.E.E. want to believe that folks who look like us have our best interest in mind.
December 4th, 2009
Under her Wiki ( I don't know how to do hotlinks–someone help me, hotlinks for Dummies-), it says Maxine Waters is the 15th most unethical Congressperson. I can't believe the CBC decided to shut down financial reform for this. Nobody cares about radio…couldn't they find something else with black people to gather around?
December 4th, 2009
Yep, it has to do with a bank – I think her husband is an officer for it, cant quite remember….but I know I've never seen a press conference or read any articles with these same CBC members….who are on the Finance Committee nonetheless, say a mumbling word about Wells Fargo. They can kiss my ass talking about working for their “constituents”….they dont give a damn about the people who are losing their homes because of subprime lending that was tantamount to FRAUD – and this by the admission of the Wells Fargo EMPLOYEES.
