ORLANDO, Fla. -- A fight over the shoes Michael Jordan's son will wear at the University of Central Florida has cost the school any future sponsorship with adidas.

"The University of Central Florida has chosen not to deliver on their contractual commitment to adidas," adidas spokeswoman Andrea Corso wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "As a result we have chosen not to continue our relationship with them moving forward."

Freshman guard Marcus Jordan wore a pair of white Air Jordans during UCF's exhibition game against Saint Leo on Wednesday night, the Orlando Sentinel reported on its Web site. Jordan has said he will only wear his father's Nike Air Jordan shoes because they hold special meaning to his family.

UCF is in the final year of a five-year contract with adidas that requires coaches and athletes to use the company's apparel and equipment. A school spokesman did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Neighbors of alleged US serial killer smelt bodies

Neighbours of alleged US serial killer Anthony Sowell had apparently complained about a foul smell for years, but many believed it was coming from a sausage shop next door.

The 50-year-old convicted rapist was arraigned on Wednesday on a string of murder charges as investigators examined the gruesome remains of up to 11 bodies unearthed at his home in Cleveland, Ohio.

Local councilman Zack Reed said he would push for an independent investigation into why complaints about the smell didn't lead to an earlier discovery.

"Residents are mad and they have every right to be mad," he told AFP.

Reed said his office called the public health department about two and a half years ago after a neighbour reported the smell. He wondered whether an earlier detection could have prevented some of the murders.

"I know darned well that our health department should have been able to tell the difference between the smell of a dead body and the smell of dead meat," he told AFP.

Illinois Abortion Law Cleared For Enforcement By Medical Board

CHICAGO — Illinois was cleared Wednesday to start enforcing a long-debated parental notification law for teens seeking abortions, after more than a decade of legal challenges.

The state's Medical Disciplinary Board voted not to extend a 90-day grace period put into place in August. That means the law takes effect, the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation said.

Illinois' law was passed in 1995, but never enforced because of various court actions. Thirty-five other states have similar laws, which meant some teens seeking abortions came to Illinois for them.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois planned to ask a Cook County judge on Wednesday for a temporary restraining order to keep the state from enforcing the law.

"What we're focused on now is protecting the health and well being of young women across the state of Illinois," spokesman Ed Yohnka said.

Inhofe Shows Up To Climate Hearing, Refuses To Discuss GOP Position, Walks Out
Just like the day before, only one Republican showed up for the Senate's climate change hearing Wednesday morning -- but not to debate.

Republicans are boycotting the Environment and Public Works Committee hearings, blocking action by exploiting a committee rule that at least two members of the minority have to be present before opening markup.

On Wednesday, ranking Republican James Inhofe of Oklahoma made a brief appearance at the hearing before the committee began its consideration of roughly 80 Democratic amendments and zero from Republicans, who offered none. In a rare move, Committee Chair Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) extended the deadline for amendments from Monday to Tuesday night on behalf of the committee Republicans, but once it became clear they wanted an extension of five weeks, she stopped waiting.

Lawrence O'Donnell had some tough words for RNC chairman Michael Steele this morning regarding the GOP's loss of the 23rd congressional district in New York for the first time in history. O'Donnell accused Steele, along with Sarah Palin and others, of leading the Republican party to defeat in the 23rd by ousting the Republican candidate Scozzafava from the race in favor of a more orthodox conservative who proved too orthodox for the voters. An incredulous O'Donnell asked Steele how such a stunning defeat could happen.

Steele responded with some humor: "Lawrence, I'll start by apologizing for letting you ask me a question in the first place... I don't apologize for anything. Last night was a great night for the Republican Party." The RNC chair argued that there wasn't much significance in the GOP losing that seat because it will have to be defended again in 2010, and he is confident the GOP can pick it back up.

It was here that O'Donnell got aggressive:

O'Donnell: Michael, you made the 23rd the most important congressional district in the country. The Democrats didn't do it. You did it. You lost it. You led your party to a disastrous loss that it has never experienced in that district before. Congratulations, nice work.

Steele: Hey Lawrence, if it makes you feel good, baby, then have at it. Just lay it on me. I'll shut up and listen to you. Because clearly you've got your talking points from the DNC. You roll them out and have fun with them. You're not going to spoil my juice right now; you're not gonna take this high away from me.

Speaking tonight at Georgia State where he gave the annual Benjamin E. Mays lecture, educator, civil rights legend and innovator Robert P. Moses called for a constitutional amendment that says “every child in this country is a child of this country and is entitled to a quality public school education.”
Founder of The Algebra Project, Moses has a dazzling resume, including a MacArthur Foundation genius grant.

Raised in Harlem, educated at Harvard, Moses began his civil rights career as field secretary for the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee. Then, he was trying to help black sharecroppers in Mississippi register to vote, and he was pistol whipped and beaten for his efforts.

Now, Moses has another injustice in his sights: unequal education.

In his work in poor and minority schools, Moses realized that the “sharecropper education in the age of cotton has been transported alive and kicking into the age of information.”

In the 1980s, Moses founded The Algebra Project, a program that teaches math literacy to poor and minority students in middle and high schools. He goes into the classroom himself and teaches kids who are at the bottom academically in math.

Glad You Liked LRW! I think whoever edited that first video was truly "High." But the video encapsulated the chaotic celebrations, hugs, dancing, kisses from strangers that was experienced that night in downtown Atlanta. Tears of Joy transformed into once-in-a-lifetime community jubilation.

So this morning upon yesterdays election and reflection, I asked my brother if he had voted. And he said "No". So, I asked him why not and he said "I wasn't interested". So goeth Virginia and New Jersey. I am sure that attitude is prevalent among many AAs who didn't go to the polls. As he was listening to the commentary on the radio about the election I just wondered if he realized that NOT voting in all elections has consequences and I wonder if most AAs realize that you HAVE to vote and not let up because we as a people can make a difference. I will bet more states will try to figure out how to schedule elections outside of major presidential years. I am most concerned now about the midterm 2010 election in Texas and how to motivate people here to insure RICK PERRY doesnt get re-elected. There has to be a wake-up call here somewhere that should resound to people that we can't afford apathy and we all must be interested. There will be Republican governor in Texas but I surely hope that it won't be Abdicating Perry. If NEW JERSEY can bring the red vote out and the blue vote goes fishing, then all of our Democratic states are in trouble in these off years. I voted yesterday and there were just a bunch of propositions on the ballot AND a new school board member. It was late in the day when I remembered but I did make my way there to vote, because people died for me to have that right. If Obama had been on the ballot there would have been no way in hell that VA and NJ governors would have been elected. But this Rethug mentality is taking hold that they can get back on top now. NOT!

What you need to understand is that most people vote for what is in their best interest. Just because you have a democrat running does not mean that people are going to vote for them. they have to 'EARN' the vote.

That said, now let's put this back in context. When people DON'T vote at all could it possibly be age-old voter apathy and the "I don't vote but in Presidential Elections" syndrome?? No need to get testy Myth. I meant no offense. I read your note and I thought your point was as a result of AAs not voting dems lost NY and VA. You also cited that if it was PBO on the ticket AAs would have all ran to the polling stations and voted for the ticket. I was curious as to why you held the belief that with the exception of your brother most AAs did not vote and that white dems all voted for the democratic ticket?

Anyway, I don't think apathy was the problem in this case. The individual candidates were the problem. I think those men (and democrats) underestimated the shift in American politics especially among the black community. They did not do due diligence by working hard to connect with voters and get their messages out as to why they would be a better choice. If I misunderstood your point and your point was that everyone should vote vs. we lost NY and VA because of AAs and they were apathetic, then by all means I offer an apology.

Beck launched into a rant about how he could have shouted for years about Osama bin Laden and warned of the attack and still no one would have taken the precautions necessary to stop it. Olbermann was having none of it:

Attorneys for sniper John Allen Muhammad, mastermind of the terrifying 2002 Washington area shooting spree, asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to halt their client's execution, saying he was paranoid and delusional during his trial.
Muhammad, 48, who teamed up with Lee Boyd Malvo, now 24, in a series of random shootings that left 10 people dead, suffers from mental illness and brain damage caused partly by childhood beatings, defense attorney Jonathan P. Sheldon and others on the defense team wrote.

As he prepared for his 2003 trial, Muhammad was "amnesic of the events surrounding the crimes" and thought he was being framed in an elaborate scheme, the attorneys wrote. He believed that he was a prophet and said Malvo discovered an herbal cure for AIDS. He also said the military had trained him in "urban warfare" at "secret schools." The attorneys said that because of Muhammad's brain damage, he has trouble following a logical line of thought and "lacks sufficient ability to distinguish truth from falsity."

I'm not always for the death penalty, BUT in the case of Muhammad, all I can say is put his azz to death. I resent him most for the way he "turned out" (for lack of a better phrase) that young boy, Lee Malvo and manipulated him into being a cold blooded killer. It's gonna be hot in hell for Muhammad.
