Classical music has its day at the White House

WASHINGTON—With two concerts and a series of workshops for young musicians, the White House put a big spotlight on classical music Wednesday and sent a strong message that it's not just for stuffed shirts.

Nothing mixes old and new like classical music," first lady Michelle Obama told students who spent the morning in music workshops and then attended an afternoon concert in which child prodigies shared the stage with some of classical music's biggest superstars.

"You can mix and blend your instruments in ways that Beethoven and Mozart never could have imagined," the first lady told the youngsters, pronouncing them "the classical music superstars of tomorrow."

Acclaimed pianist Awadagin Pratt plunked himself down on a piano bench next to 14-year-old Lucy Hattemer of Cincinnati to perform a Schubert duet on the East Room's Steinway. Renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein, 27, was upstaged by her 8-year-old partner, Sujari Britt, a student at New York's Manhattan School of Music, when they performed a duet by Italian composer Luigi Boccherini.

The concert also featured performances by Grammy-winners Sharon Isbin on guitar and Joshua Bell on violin.

Glenn Beck suffered a sudden attack of appendicitis Wednesday and was taken to an undisclosed hospital to have his appendix removed.

Beck left his radio show Wednesday complaining that he was not feeling well. Mercury Radio president Christopher Balfe confirmed to radio blog NTS Media that Beck was having his appendix removed at an undisclosed hospital. Balfe also joked that "before going under Glenn asked the doctor to draw out the surgery procedure on a blackboard."

Judge Andrew Napolitano guest-hosted Beck's 5PM show on Fox News in his absence, adding that he is expected to make a full recovery and return soon.

Oprah's Domestic Violence Double Standard?

Oprah is being called out by a number of media outlets for her alleged double standard regarding domestic violence.

At the center of the controversy is Debra Winans, ex-wife of the 47-year old Grammy Award winning gospel and R&B singer BeBe Winans. In February, a story made headlines that BeBe had shoved Debra to the ground in front of their two kids (ages 10 and 13) after a verbal dispute regarding custody issues. A domestic charge violence against BeBe is pending until a court hearing in 2010.

Oprah has been very vocal about her zero-tolerance policy regarding domestic abuse following the highly publicized Chris Brown and Rihanna incident. On February 8, 2009, after a Grammy Awards pre-show party, the two singers had a physical altercation in a vehicle that left Rihanna bloodied and bruised. After the incident, Oprah's told 'Access Hollywood' that "Domestic violence is something that I wouldn't tolerate. Period," and subsequently banned Chris Brown from appearing on her show. Ironically, BeBe's arrest came only one day before Oprah aired a special on her show about domestic violence.

Just recently, Winfrey invited BeBe Winans on her show to host "Oprah's Karaoke Challenge," an 'American Idol' style competition to find the nation's best karaoke singer. Winans was brought on to promote his new reunion album with his sister CeCe Winans, 'Still.'

Many wonder if Winfrey was simply unaware of the charges against Winans. Others see it as a blantant double standard. TMZ recently spoke to Debra Winans, who said she is "hurt by Oprah's decision to have BeBe on the show." Winfrey has yet to issue a public response.

So many young people between the prime recruiting ages of 17 and 24 cannot meet minimum standards that a group of retired military leaders is calling for more investment in early childhood education to combat the insidious effects of junk food and inadequate education.

yes, elementary kids are taught about sexuality and how some girls like girls and some boys like boys. Adolescence 'innocence' is about very explicit sex ed. If you go to your school board and ask for the 8-12th grade sex manual you will be shocked at how explicit it is.
Teachers now have anatomical correct models (dildos) in classrooms where they demonstrate the correct way to put on condoms.

No different than any other behaviors that are viewed as deleterious..it is the behavior that parents do not want their children exposed to. This manual is clearly NOT geared towards middle school students like you claimed. It's a pamphlet aimed toward gay and bisexual MEN created by the AIDS Action Committee. According to the pamphlet, the "Little Black Book" was created by the Seattle's Gay City Health Project. So, this pamphlet has NOTHING to do with teaching elementary school children explicit sex acts.

All of them are behaviors, which folks have control over. I believe those behaviors (obesity/alcoholism) are acceptable to our society which is why I used them to demonstrate a contrast and to highlight, that even if we do tolerate behaviors, we STILL have parameters about how we disseminate information and how we promote or influence elementary children when it comes to those behaviors.

There is domestic abuse, rape and homicide as well..when we do not discuss it with elementary kids that is not denial of it's existence. Rather, it is a recognition of the fact that it is inappropriate for elementary age kids.
