What a long and crazy week. The President is not black enough, he’s scared of white people, he needs a lesson on civil rights, he’s sexist; and to end the week some folks are creating drama with Snooki-gate and mongrel-gate. Whew! With all this lunacy going on and on, the Lounge brings out the Jack Daniels tonight. Enjoy it with coke, on the rocks, neat or however you prefer. Salud!

Please feel free to add a music video about the president’s week, the soul patrol, cable news hacks or anything else on your mind.

By The Time I Get To Arizona News: Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is asking legislators to consider whether they should change the state’s immigration law in response to a judge’s ruling blocking parts of it. Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman confirms that the governor called top legislative leaders to broach the possibility of changing provisions of the law on Thursday, a day after U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton issued a preliminary injunction. Oil Spill News: BP’s incoming CEO said Friday it is time for a “scaleback” of the effort to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, but added there is no “pullback” in the energy giant’s commitment to the disaster, the Associated Press reports. Bob Dudley, who heads BP’s oil spill recovery, told reporters in Biloxi, Miss., it’s “not too soon for a scaleback” and in areas where there is no oil, “you probably don’t need to see people in hazmat suits on the beach.” Read more here.

Economic News: The recession was clearly worse than originally estimated (we suspected this already using Gross Domestic Income). In fact real GDP in Q2 2010 was lower than originally reported for Q1 2010. And annualized real GDP is still 0.85% below the pre-recession peak. This means that real GDP would have to grow at a 3.4% rate in Q3 to reach the recession peak by the end of Q2 2011. Read more here.

The US Dollar Is Worth Less Than The Paper They Print It On News: The dollar hit its lowest since November against the Japanese yen on Friday as data showed growth in the world’s largest economy is slowing, reinforcing expectations for low U.S. interest rates into 2011. Read more here.

(sigh) Couldn’t tell the truth if their lives depended on it.

Yesterday, the President signed the Tribal Law and Order Act, giving Native Americans more authority to combat crime in Native communities.

According to a Department of Justice report, Native American women suffer from violent crime at a rate three and a half times greater than the national average. Astoundingly, one in three Native American women will be raped in their lifetimes.

The Act includes a strong emphasis on decreasing violence against women in Native communities. Focusing not only on prosecution, however, the Act includes important provisions aimed at prevention. It reauthorizes and improves programs to prevent and treat alcohol and substance abuse, as well as programs that improve opportunities for at-risk Indian youth.

Transcript:

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. Everybody, please have a seat. Have a seat. Take a load off. (Applause.) Thank you.

Good morning, Urban Leaguers.

AUDIENCE: Good morning.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes. It is wonderful to be here with all of you. It is wonderful to be here. And let me begin by congratulating Marc Morial for his outstanding leadership, his great friendship. (Applause.) I want to thank the entire National Urban League on your centennial. From your founding, amid the great migration, to the struggles of the civil rights movement, to the battles of today, the Urban League has been on the ground, in our communities, working quietly -– day in, day out -– without fanfare; opening up opportunity, rolling back inequality, making our union just a little more perfect. America is a better place because of the Urban League. And I’m grateful to all of you for the outstanding contributions that you’ve made. (Applause.)

The last time I spoke with you was during your Orlando conference in August — (applause) — got Orlando in the house. (laughter) — Orlando conference back in August of 2008. I didn’t have any gray hair back then. (Laughter.) Say that’s all right? (Laughter and applause.) But I want to remind you what things were like in August of 2008. Our economy was in freefall. We had just seen seven straight months of job loss. Foreclosures were sweeping the nation. And we were on the verge of a financial crisis that threatened to plunge our economy into a second Great Depression.

So, from the moment I took office, we had to act immediately to prevent an even greater catastrophe. And I knew that not everything we did would be popular. Sometimes when we do things, the scribes, the pundits here in Washington, they act surprised. They say, why would you do such a thing, it doesn’t poll well. And I have to explain to them I’ve got my own pollsters. (Laughter and applause.) But I wasn’t elected just to do what’s popular; I was elected do what was right. That’s what you supported me for. (Applause.)

And because of what we did, America, as a whole, is in a different place today. Our economy is growing, instead of shrinking. Our private sector has been adding jobs for six straight months, instead of losing them. (Applause.)
